Steve Mitten's Life And Business Coaching Notes - January 2009

Little Steve

(I recently found this old photo of me as a toddler on my favorite beach.
One of my goals for 2009 is to recapture more of the joy and sense of mystery I had back then.)

Dear Subscribers,

Sincere wishes for a very happy and successful New Year!

It may still be cold and dark out there but the sun is on the move and the days ahead are going to get lighter and brighter.

Here are a few thoughts to help you start off the New Year.

1) True Confidence

2) Marketing In Tough Times

3) Affordable Business Development Mentoring For Coaches

1) True Confidence

As I write this, we have recently gone through 2 weeks of snow and unusually cold weather. I cannot remember the last time I've shoveled as much of the white stuff.

In the last few days we have started to return to the warmer and wetter weather we are used to here in the Pacific Northwest. The big thaw is underway.

Even though any rational observer would acknowledge we officially have at least another 10 weeks of winter and the possibility of many more cold days, the birds around my house have decided to declare it an early spring. The forest is alive with the calls of chickadees and other birds preparing for their mating season.

I worry a bit for the welfare of these little guys, but I have to admit I love their spirit. I love the way they shake off the trials of yesterday and at the slightest sign of warming get back to living their life, doing what they were meant to do in the world. I love the confidence they have in life.

An etymologically inclined friend once told me that the word confidence comes from the Latin word confido, which is formed from the roots con (with), fid (faith), in deo (God) - to completely trust in God.

Rather than a religious assertion I view this as simply a very wise outlook on life. I deeply admire those few people I know who simply choose to live their lives having the confidence to believe that no matter what happens they can handle it, and it will all work out just fine.

So even though there may be a little more winter ahead in your life or business, even though the rational mind might default to worrying about colder days to come, I invite you to start this New Year by coming back to the present moment. You are alive. You are far more creative and capable than you can possibly imagine, and you can adapt to anything. You are never alone, disconnected or forgotten by life and at any moment a new path can be choosen.

So as we begin this new year, take a moment to consider: What juicy, exciting, bold, initiative do you want to accomplish? If you trusted that you couldn't possibly fail, what would you like to do this year? Where does your world (or customers) need your passion and strengths the most right now?

Take a page from the chickadees. Life is short. Don't wait any longer to create more of what you want. Do more of what you love and are called to do. Laugh more, love more, dance more. Get a dream that inspires you, surround yourself with the support you need and take the first step.

True confidence is a choice to trust that you will be looked after each and every step of the way and regardless of what life might send you, it will work out in wonderful, unforeseen ways.

"Staring at the blank page before you
Open up the dirty window
Let the sun illuminate the words that you could not find
Reaching for something in the distance
So close you can almost taste it
Release your inhibitions
Feel the rain on your skin
No one else can feel it for you
Only you can let it in
No one else, no one else
Can speak the words on your lips
Drench yourself in words unspoken
Live your life with arms wide open
Today is where your book begins
The rest is still unwritten"

- N. Bedingfield

2) Marketing in Tough Times

With so many people concerned about the impact of the recession on their lives and businesses, I have devoted a lot of time speaking on the topic. Here is a link to a recording of a talk I delivered to the CTI community.

It covers the challenges and opportunities of marketing coaching in turbulent times.  I talk about; the current economic realities, what lies ahead, who the winners and losers might be, where the opportunities are and how to handle the stress and get through it all. I end with some practical marketing tips designed to help more coaches weather any economic conditions.

"I know God will not give me anything I can't handle.
I just wish that He didn't trust me so much."

- Mother Teresa
