New Year Special Edition - January 2006

 

Dear Friends,

This is the season of new beginnings.  A time where most of us step back from the daily fray long enough to ask questions like, "Is this path taking me where I want to go?", "Am I as fully alive, engaged, loving or joyful as possible?",  "What could be even better in my life, career or business a year from now?"  (Of course, frequent readers of this newsletter will know that the key question is always on the level of, "How do I need to grow/change/evolve to become the person to whom the better results would naturally flow?")

Those of us that do this work know that the most meaningful changes don't happen in a constant, linear way.  Most change happens in fits and starts. There is a dance to it. And making the most of changes in your life is all about being ready and open to them, choosing to respond differently as new awarenesses arise, and creating the support structures to keep change alive.  

I invite you all to dream big this year, and create whatever support system you need to ensure your most fulfilling, creative, and audacious visions come true in 2006.

1) THIS YEAR - SET GOALS WITH SOUL

How are you doing with your New Year's Resolutions?

If you are like most of us, there's a good chance your New Year's Resolutions won't stick. There's a long list of reasons people fail to reach their goals each year. Often people don't set goals that really excite them.  Other times people try big goals but don't set up sufficient support structures to keep them on track. Many times people try to achieve new heights with the same old set of beliefs and habits. However one of the major, (and least discussed), reasons is that many goals are simply not deeply aligned with soul.  

If you have a goal that is shallow, transitory, or in conflict with your values or your concept of your ideal self - it's no wonder you don't reach them. A big part of you is simply disinterested, disengaged or otherwise actively sabotaging your efforts, because it knows they will not lead you to a place of deeper fulfillment.  

Our ego (or smaller, fearful, reactionary self) is very good at rolling out an endless supply of "must-have-to-be-happy" goals based on its false valuation of our worth, our abilities and what really leads us to satisfaction. This type of goal has no staying power. (Even if you are successful in achieving these ego based goals, they provide little lasting meaning.)  So be cautious of any goals with a focus around needing far more money, looking drastically different, or otherwise acquiring something outside yourself, etc., before you can enjoy your life.

And this year, before you settle on  goals that may or may not be deeply satisfying, put them past these filters:

  • Will my goal make my (or the) world a more loving, healthy or otherwise better place?

  • Will my goals cause me to grow as a human being, be more fully expressed and bring forth more of the very best of me?

  • Do my goals include attending to the "being" side (qualities I need to develop) to sustain the "doing" side?

  • Do my goals  excite and engage me?  (If they don't scare you a little, or if you already know how to achieve them, you are thinking too small.)

  • Do my goals point to the journey as well as the destination?

If you can add this to the regular process of setting great goals, (if you need more help, check out last January's newsletter at http://www.acoach4u.com/newsletter/newsletter-Jan_05.htm) and everyday do those things that manage the stress and keep you optimistic, kind, and mindful - you will be well on your way to having a fabulous year.  Good luck.

2) COACHING AND STRESS - NEW FINDINGS

The fact that we live in an overstressed world is hardly news. However, the extent of the level of stress might surprise you:

  • A UN International Labour Organization Study, indicates spiraling levels of anxiety, burnout and depression across the globe.

  • Every day, an estimated 1 million North American employees are absent from work due to stress-related complaints.

  • Between 75 and 90 percent of all visits to primary care physicians are for stress-related complaints or disorders.

  • The National Sleep Foundation reports that — a staggering 47 percent of U.S. workers are having trouble sleeping.

When you consider the impact of excessive stress on our health, relationships, overall effectiveness, and quality of life - you can begin to see how big the problem is.

As coaches, we are always dealing with some form of stress. Sometimes we create it with our clients to promote change. Most times we have to reduce it, to facilitate reflection, learning and growth. (And then there is the managing of the stress we find ourselves under.) 

Recently, there have been some remarkable breakthroughs in the study of stress. Two weeks ago I had the pleasure of listening to a webinar by  Dr. Richard Boyatzis.  Richard is one of the leading researchers in the area of emotional intelligence and leadership. In his talk Richard revealed some new information that is valuable to anybody engaged in coaching, teaching or parenting. For example, did you know that under prolonged stress, your ability to change or  learn (actually generate new neural pathways) is virtually eliminated? This is important to anyone (particularly leaders), who by the very nature of their job are in a situation where; the outcome is uncertain, the stakes are high, and their performance is being evaluated.

What this means to coaches, is that if your client is under high levels of stress, (and who isn't these days) you will need to help them lower their stress level before significant change is possible.

Richard also talked at length about what triggers our sympathetic (stress response) and parasympathetic nerve system (relaxation response), and discusses the need for anyone under stress, to develop their own renewal process, which must be practiced at least twice a day.

Richard also emphasized the renewing powers of hope, compassion and mindfulness, and actually encouraged stressed leaders to regularly coach their subordinates, as the very act of focusing on and empowering someone else is a great act of personal renewal.

3) MARKETING TIP - IDEAS FOR MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR JANUARY MARKETING EFFORTS 

People are ready to change in January.  It's a traditional time for dreaming big, setting new goals and moving into action.  And while almost everyone sets New Year's resolutions, most are painfully aware how ineffective unsupported resolutions actually are.  The truth is that intentions alone, rarely translate into results.  

This broad realization means January is a great time for marketing coaching services. There is no better time of year to get motivated, get organized, and get out there raising your profile and talking to people.  

Here are a few suggestions for some of the different client groups in your practice.

NEW CLIENTS

January is a great time to send out a letter, write an article, or give a speech on the theme of making changes stick, setting goals, staying on track, etc. Since most people know their likelihood of sustaining big changes is small, they are more open to say "yes" to your offer of assistance.  

However you choose to get in touch with prospects, be sure to have them imagine the changes they want to make, and reflect on the value of those changes.  For most ideal coaching clients, making significant changes in their life, health, finances, relationships, career or business will either be priceless, or worth many thousands of dollars.  Contemplating the value of those outcomes, will encourage more to take you up on your offer of coaching.

OLD CLIENTS

Your old clients, ones who have already completed with you, are a great group to connect with at this time of year. January offers you the opportunity to contact them with a special "tune up" offer.  Since the people you have previously worked with already know you, like you, trust you, value coaching and appreciate that growth is an ongoing process, they are a very receptive audience to any program that will inject their year with renewed clarity and inspiration.
