(In response to a question on the Coactive Network.)
I came into coaching from another profession which had a governing body that set standards of practice. So as I started my training I began to look around to see what group was doing this in coaching. In those days, the ICF was the only group attempting to; define what coaching is, set the core curriculum so coaching programs can be on the same page regarding training and get accredited, set ethical standards, organize a network of chapters around the world to support coaches, deal with the media and do proactive marketing to raise the profile of coaching, deal with government or other professional bodies that would seek to regulate or eliminate coaching, and establish a common set of credentials that coaches from the (now hundreds of) different training programs could gather together under.
We would not be where we are today if thousands and thousands of coaches over the years had not volunteered countless hours to set up and nurture the development of this young profession.
In terms of practical benefits, the fact that I have an ICF credential makes it easier for me to qualify for work, particularly within organizations. I enjoy attending ICF conferences where I meet with other members of the tribe and continue to learn. And our local ICF chapter, continues to support local coaches in their learning and development.
Bottom line, I support the ICF, because it supports coaching and coaches. And when we all join together, we can do some amazing things.
Hope this helps,
