I genuinely love the young profession of coaching and am deeply grateful to have discovered it. I believe coaches do very important work in the world. To help build this profession I have always volunteered a significant chunk of my time (at the ICF, coaching groups, schools, forums, etc.) to help increase the professionalism of coaching and the commercial success of coaches. I have also made a study of best marketing practices, wrote a book on the topic, mentored over 500 coaches, and seen hundreds of ways coaches can build a flexible business doing what they love.
Building your own coaching business is absolutely doable. However, you need to be aware that coaching services are not that easy to market. Coaching is still such a new service that most people do not understand or appreciate it. So, to succeed as a coach you have to put in the time to learn how to coach, you also have to learn what does and does not work in terms of building a commercially successful coaching practice. You can’t simply call yourself a coach, get some cards, put up a website, tell your friends, and expect to be successful. Way too many coaches try this, and way too many of them end up struggling needlessly.
Please, do not ignore the importance of learning how to market and figuring out your best way to attract enough of your ideal clients. Whether you are an aspiring or an established coach, there are 10’s of thousands of coaches who have come before you and there is a lot of collective wisdom available. What follows is a lot of info that I believe will help short cut your journey to success, and keep you out of some of the more predictable pot holes.
Please take your time to go through the various free articles, recordings and videos that can help you learn from the experience of some of the thousands of coaches who have come before you. Good luck and happy coaching.

Here is a video I put together discussing some of the most common mistakes coaches make with their websites, that keep them from attracting enough of their ideal clients.
All About Niches For Coaches (Business, Executive or Life)
One of the most common questions I receive from newer coaches concerns finding a niche. So many coaches struggle to find enough clients and wonder if having a niche, or a specific focus or set of ideal clients for their practice, will help. In this short video I talk about what a niche is, how it works, what the benefits are, and how you might begin to find yours.
HOW TO FIND YOUR NICHE AS A COACH
This is the recording from a call done for the Co-Active Network in December of 2015 on the rationale and process of finding a profitable niche as a coach.

MARKETING, IN THE EARLY DAYS OF YOUR PRACTICE
As powerful as coaching is, its benefits are still largely unknown to the majority of potential clients. And few potential clients purchase something they don’t understand.
For most newer coaches, trying to describe coaching is usually a fruitless exercise. However, a powerful experience of coaching, focused on an important change, challenge or goal, can often turn a skeptical prospect into a happy and enthusiastic client.
In this talk we are exploring some of the most effect early stage marketing strategies – to help you get your first 20 clients. Topics covered will include:
– The very real challenges and great opportunities faced in the marketing of coaching services.
– How to qualify prospects so you don’t waste your time marketing to people who could not possibly hire you.
– How to confidently deliver powerful sample sessions that get you hired.
– What are the typical success rates.
– How much marketing time and effort does it take to actually get a client.
– How to deal with objections, ask for the business, and get referrals.
THE HERO’S JOURNEY AND COACHING
In their day to day life, (and in the building of their practice) many coaches face a wide range of experiences – from inspired callings and purposeful visions, all the way real doubts, and seemingly insurmountable challenges. Our path into coaching can be seen as a journey that teaches us some important lessons on who we are and what we are really capable of.
Joseph Campbell’s work on “The Hero’s Journey” arises out of the observation that the principal journeys we take in life follow a timeless theme. There are recognizable stages, important thresholds, natural consequences, mysterious forces at play, and extraordinary outcomes possible.
It is the stuff of myth, and this ancient wisdom holds great and timeless insights to help us (and our clients) grow past our current limitations and achieve remarkable breakthroughs.
MARKETING Q AND A CALLS
Whenever I do a teleclass, I try to save some time at the end of the call for questions and answers. There always seems to be dozens of questions that coaches are dying to ask about the nuances of building a practice, pricing their services, adapting coaching tools for various audiences, finding niches, typical start-up curves, earning potential, what really works, etc, etc. So, we started running these FREE FOR ALL Q AND A CALLS to give an opportunity for all your burning marketing, practice building or coaching questions could be answered. Here are a few of the most recent calls from the Coactive Network.
